Lim Tiong Kiang
Member - Choral Directors' Association (Singapore)
Tiong Kiang brings more than a decade of experience as a choral educator and vocal teacher in helping music-lovers of different ages and backgrounds excel in the art of singing.
Tiong Kiang’s school choirs have consistently won Distinction, Gold with Honors and Gold awards at the annual Singapore Youth Festival. Under his direction, Changkat Primary School Choir won the coveted Gold with Honors award in 2012 and was invited to perform at the SYF Choral Presentation. That same year, two other choirs under his care, South View Primary School and Kong Hwa Primary School, also clinched their maiden Gold awards.
In 2013, Tiong Kiang transformed Gan Eng Seng School Choir from a Bronze choir to attain the Certificate of Distinction within 6 months. As guest conductor of St Joseph’s Convent choir and Unity Secondary School choir, he guided both choirs to win Gold awards at the 21st International Arts Festival held at Genting Highlands.
In 2014 and 2015, all of Tiong Kiang’s choirs were awarded Certificates of Distinction. This is a testament to the hard work and sacrifices that the conductor, teachers and students have put in.
Tiong Kiang’s choirs enjoy a demanding but fulfilling program. His school choirs regularly put up public concerts at venues such as the Arts House and the Esplanade Recital Studio. They also participate regularly in community events such as charity performances at old folks’ home. The choirs have also tested their mettle and done well (Distinctions) at the ABRSM and Trinity choral examinations.
A firm believer in constant self-improvement, Tiong Kiang attended the Westminster Conducting Institute organized by the renowned Westminster Choir College in 2012 where he worked with prominent choral pedagogues Weston Noble and James Jordan. He also spent a summer semester at the Michigan State University in the United States working with Dr David Rayl and Dr Jonathan Reed. In Aug 2013 he was selected to participate in a masterclass by Maestro Gabor Hollerung (Hungary) at the Taipei International Choral Festival where he had the honor of conducting the orchestra and choir in the final movement of Bach’s cantata No. 21. In Dec 2013, he participated in a masterclass under Mr Patrick Russil from the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Tiong Kiang sings with ONE Chamber Choir. ONE Chamber Choir won the First Prize in the Chamber Choir category at the 1st Andrea Veranacion International Choral Festival 2013 held in Manila. They also emerged as winners of the Second Prize in the mixed and open categories at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod held in Wales, UK. He has also sung with Amoris Singers, an advanced ensemble specializing in sacred music.
Tiong Kiang is honoured to have been commissioned to compose both the lyrics and the music for North Vista Primary School’s school song. He is also grateful for the opportunity to be a Vocal Instructor working with aspiring teenagers from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance of Singapore for the 8th ASEAN Para Games 2015 held in Singapore.
