Mrs Kwek-Puah Hwee Khee is an accomplished Choral Director in Singapore with 2 decades of experience in conducting school and community choirs. Hwee Khee attained a Diploma in Choral Conducting (ALCM) from the London College of Music, Distinction in Voice from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Grade 8 in Piano and Theory from the ABRSM and she also holds a Masters of Education (Music) from the National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore.
With a strong passion for the choral arts, Hwee Khee has a proven track record in nurturing talent to perform on both the local and international stages. She has led primary and secondary school choirs to numerous accolades in choral festivals and competitions in Singapore and abroad.
Over the years, choirs under her tutelage have garnered close to 20 Gold awards at the Singapore Youth Festival. Nanyang and Gan Eng Seng Primary school choirs obtained Gold with Honours in 2012 and 2008 respectively. It was the most prestigious and coveted award given to top performing choirs.
Under her direction, her choirs have participated in concerts, festivals and competitions overseas (Gold awards) including in Czech Republic (Festival of Songs), Prague (Young Prague Festival), Slovakia (Festa Choralis), China (Suzhou), Taiwan (Taichung), Hong Kong (Winter Choral Festival and Hong Kong International Youth and Childrens’ Festival) and Malaysia (The Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod International Choral Festival, Voyage of Songs).
At the Hong Kong Winter Choral Festival in 2016, the Nanyang Primary School choir was accorded the Special Jury prize for Artistic Expression and Gold award.
At the 2015 Orientale Concentus VIII, an international choral extravaganza attended by top choral teams in the region, the Gan Eng Seng Primary School choir was awarded a Gold, Category winner and Grand Prix finalist. The choir received a special jury prize for Outstanding Performance of a Singapore work. Hwee Khee also received a Conductor’s Prize for outstanding artistic achievement.
The River Valley Primary School choir achieved a Gold award at the Singapore International Choral Festival in 2015 and was the only Singapore choir in the Grand Prix. The same choir also obtained the highest Gold award of 98 points at the Bratislava Choral Festival in 2011.
Her choirs have also performed in Youth Celebrate, River Hongbao for Chinese New Year and Esplanade in collaboration with Philharmonic winds. They have been invited to special public performances at the esplanade concourse, National Day Observance, National Gallery, Chijmes and Crazy Christmas by Dream Academy. Her choirs also sang at hospitals, parks, shopping malls, old folks home and community events. Hwee Khee’s choirs have often been commended for their lively and expressive performances
Hwee Khee is especially dedicated to working with young voices aged 7 to 12 years and inspiring them to discover the joys of song and music. She exposes her students to diverse musical repertoire so they can explore and experience various styles, rhythms, melodies and harmonies. She incorporates vocal pedagogy to strengthen their singing techniques and encourage creative expression. With a pleasant personality, Hwee Khee is well-liked by her students.
